Writing a Sentence in the Past Continuous Tense
A past continuous tense describes an action going on at some time in the past.
To form the past continuous tense, we add -ing to the end of the main verb and add the auxiliary verb to be - was, were (conjugated or form changed) before it.
Subject | Auxiliary or Helping Verb (be) |
I | was |
You (singular/ plural) | were |
He / She / It | was |
We | were |
They | were |
They were running towards you.
In the sentence above, “running” was a continuous action at some time in the past.
The subject of this sentence is “They” (third person plural), so we will use the verb were with the -ing form of the main verb run, added after it.
