Reflexive pronouns always end with -self (singular) or -selves (plural). They refer back to the subject of a sentence, or the subject of a clause. The subject always comes before the reflexive pronoun.

Reflexive pronouns are used when both the subject and the object of a verb are same. Hence, they should match with the subject.

Subject (singular)

I

you

he

she

it

Reflexive pronoun

myself

yourself

himself

herself

itself

Subject (plural)

we

you

they

Reflexive pronoun

ourselves

yourselves

themselves

Possessive pronouns refer to a specific person or thing. They indicate who or what owns something.

Jay (subject) gave a   party for himself (reflexive pronoun) and for his (possessive pronoun)  friends.

The subject of the sentence is Jay. Since Jay can be replaced with the singular, masculine pronoun he, so the correct reflexive pronoun is himself. The possessive noun Jay’s can be replaced with the possessive pronoun his.

Hence, himself is used to replace Jay as the object of the proposition, for.
