Object Pronouns

Object pronouns - also called objective pronouns - are a specific type of pronoun that receives the action in a sentence, but isn’t the subject. To learn more about their functioning, follow along!

What Are Object Pronouns?

Object pronouns function as both indirect and direct objects receiving the action within a sentence. The object is somehow affected by the action of the subject of the sentence, which sounds confusing, but it really isn’t when you see it laid out.

Each object pronoun corresponds to a subject pronoun, so, when you look at it this way, it becomes a bit easier to understand. Take a look at the chart below and the example sentences.

Subject PronounObject PronounExamples (subject & object)
ImeI love to read books. He gave me several more to read.
youyouYou should try my pen. It would be perfect for you.
hehimHe always works diligently. Nothing is too hard for him.
sheherShe dances beautifully. I’d love to meet her.
ititIt is my favorite candy. I love to eat it.
weusWe prefer to eat outdoors. Maybe you can join us.
theythemThey always sing softly. It’s hard to hear them.

QUICK TIP!

Remember that case still matters, so you want to use singular subject pronouns for a single subject, and plural subjects for more than one.

When Do You Use Object Pronouns?

Object pronouns function as the direct or indirect object in a sentence, and are used instead of an object noun because we’ve already found out the object in a previous sentence or as a part of the same sentence.

For example,

She’s my dance instructor. I really enjoy learning from her.

I love this ornament. I saw it in the Christmas store earlier this month.
